Five years ago, "Chaos Unleashed" was created in the hopes of uniting the poppers of the dance scene in a gathering of exhilarating elevation; the competition was also created with the intention to give exposure to the unique talents of Montreal on an international level. We are proud to say that “Chaos Unleashed” has inspired and challenged many dancers around the globe. And we give all credit to the popping scene which has been undergoing constant evolution all the while we were working hard to bring this yearly celebration of skill. We started with 80 people in a small packed room and have grown five-fold ever since. We have a wide spectrum of followers: dancers, spectators, children, adults, veterans, and newcomers. Regardless of whether you want to battle, to cypher, to watch, or to chill and party – “Chaos Unleashed” will be a gratifying experience. We humbly invite you to bring yourselves, your friends and your family.

The Dance

Popping is an illusionary dance where the dancer manipulates the body in precise mechanical ways to bring the music to life before your very eyes. This requires meticulous control of muscular contraction and relaxation in various parts of the body. As simple as it may sound, being able to properly control your body in this way requires years of practice and artistic dedication. The dancer couples this mix of contraction-relaxation with a panorama of movements and concepts to bring you an aesthetic and inhuman visual experience. Whether or not the movement on its own is beautiful or hideous, the detailed muscle control (sometimes subtle, sometimes impactful) has the ability to make the dance visually attractive and engaging. True mastery is witnessed when a dancer can freely distort and “play” with the rules without losing the crucial illusion aspect of this dance.

The Event

The poppers face one another in a “freestyle duel” in which everything is improvised on the spot. Each dancer does not know beforehand who they will face or what music will play during each battle. Each round has a time limit (ranging from 30 seconds to one minute per dancer) and the dancers must sufficiently showcase their style, energy, skill, creativity, and musicality in these short rounds. A skilled popper can tailor their style in different ways depending on who they are battling and what kind of music is playing. At the end of each battle, the carefully chosen veteran judges give their verdict on who wins the battle and advances to the next round. The last popper standing is named the winner of "Chaos Unleashed" and is rewarded with a prize worthy of a champion.
